Back to School!

Yesterday Elliot returned to school. His first day back since his procedure went well. I was hesitant because he still has some spots (and scabs) but it wasn't as noticeable as before. When we arrived at the school he said "I'm scared. It's been a long time since I've went to school." I knew he would be nervous. :( He didn't cry though! He said his day went good, and that people did ask what happened on his face. He said "I told them it's my birthmark." I don't think he felt like explaining the laser treatment, and this is his go-to response for questions like these. He said that Aislee (our best friends daughter) also told people if they asked. He is blessed to have a built in support system at school (2 siblings and 3 "cousins").

I snapped a pic of him as he was walking in. Love this little boy <3

Hi Jena,
When is his next treatment? Or rather, how often is he getting treatments now.

I am also wondering, as long as you keep doing the maintenance treatments will the level of lightening achieved be maintained through out teen/adulthood?

Thanks for blogging your experiences!

Hi Diana,

I'm so sorry I haven't responded sooner! We are technically in a "maintenance phase" at this point where we will do, likely, 1 treatment per year. I plan to contact his laser surgeon in the next month to discuss possibilites of utilizing a different laser to help reduce scarring, as he scabbed pretty bad during the last treatment and it has left some more scarring. In the past we were told that these will lighten as he grows so I just want to consult with the doctor again.

As of today maintenance treatments will likely be an ongoing part of Elliot's life. However, with further research and technology we are hopeful for more innovative treatments that will help decrease the chance of the vessels reforming (thus eliminating the need for maintenance treatments).

Thank you so much for sharing in our experience with us!
